Results of a new study show that African American women who follow a healthy diet can lower their overall risk of developing breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of the disease in women, but if caught in its earliest stage, is very treatable. According to researchers, women who eat a diet which is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, are less likely to develop the disease than women who consume a more Western diet.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the goal is to provide education to women about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, through workshops, fun runs, and other advertising campaign strategies.
Even professional sports leagues are taking initiative to promote breast cancer education. The NFL is doing its part, sporting pink goalposts, and players will also be sporting pink shoes and wrist bands. Researchers published their study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
