Mediterranean Diet Lowers Heart Disease Risk Among MenMen who consume a Mediterranean-style diet can enhance their heart function and reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to a new Indiana University study.

In an effort to eliminate the genetic risk factors commonly linked to heart disease, the research team utilized dietary questionnaires and cardiac data from 276 identical or fraternal twins. The patients were graded on how strictly they followed the diet,.

And each underwent an assessment of their heart rate variability (HRV), which is the variation in the time interval between heart beats. People with a reduced HRV are known to have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and sudden death, according to the researchers.

Lead author Jun Dai and his colleagues found that men who closely followed the Mediterranean-style diet had a more variable heart rate, compared with those that did not follow the diet, resulting in a 9 percent to 14 percent decreased risk of cardiovascular-related death.

Nutritionist Mathew Soloman recommends dried fruit as easy to take along and a perfect snack for mid morning or mid afternoon. “Healthy dried fruit and yogurt makes a healthy and tasty side dish or dessert,” he said, adding that an important benefit is the nutritional value found in dried fruit.

The soft types of dried fruits offer a high-carbohydrate, low-fat snack. Each type of fruit has its individual health benefit, for example dried banana chips are high in potassium. In general, dried fruits supply some important nutritional needs such as antioxidants iron, folic acid, fibre and assorted vitamins.

Eating fruit reduces the risk of diabetes, heart attack, cancer and strokes. Further, the only vitamin not offered in dried fruit as much as fresh fruit is vitamin C, because it does not hold up through the drying process well. Dried fruits are convenient to take on the run. Sports enthusiasts love them for a quick snack due to the ease of use and the high carbohydrate content which provides energy.

Personal Hygiene For Men Showering

December 17, 2009 |13:06 | Personal Hygiene  By : Team X

Welcome to the first in a series of articles on Personal Hygiene for Men (in particular for the bigger guys). This post will concentrate on showering – yes, the very basics but it’s incredible how many guys DON’T shower regularly. Trust me, it’s easy to spot AND smell (and no, I don’t go around smelling guys – when you have to work closely with a group of people, it’s easy to tell who showers and who does not…).

Guys – if you’re king sized you MUST shower daily. There can be no ifs ands or buts. Bigger guys sweat more because of all that insulation surrounding us – but that’s no reason that you cannot smell nice!

Ideally shower first thing in the morning – so you feel clean and fresh. You should also be showering before going to bed, to get rid of all the dust and sweat that your body has accumulated througout the course of the day — whether you work in an office, or outdoors you need to take a shower 1-2 times per day.

How junk food diet 'can give you depression'

November 2, 2009 |13:37 | Personal Hygiene  By : Team X

How junk food diet can give you depressionEating junk food can make you depressed, doctors have warned. Those who regularly eat high-fat foods, processed meals, desserts and sweets are almost 60 per cent more likely to suffer depression than those who choose fruit, vegetables and fish.

Researchers claim their study is the first to investigate the link between overall diet and mental health, rather than the effects of individual foods.

Dr Eric Brunner, one of the researchers from University College London, said: 'There seem to be various aspects of lifestyle such as taking exercise which also matter, but it appears that diet is playing an independent role.'  The study, in the British Journal of Psychiatry, used data on 3,486 male and female civil servants aged around 55.

Each participant completed a questionnaire about their eating habits and a self-report assessment for depression five years later.

The researchers found that those with the highest consumption of processed food were 58 per cent more likely to be depressed five years later than those eating the least amount.
